Drill mode offers gamified exercises to practice specific shots and track your progress. After each drill, the Wingfield Box rates your performance on a scale from 0 to 100, giving you a clear benchmark to challenge yourself.
Drills make your practice a little more interactive and, above all, more competitive. The Wingfield Box rates your performance in an exercise with a very simple score, making it easier for you to define and monitor workout goals.
Each shot you play will be rated on a scale from 0 to 100. To simplify, the faster and more accurate you hit the previously selected target field, the higher your score will be. The sum of all individual shots is your total score for the drill.
💡 Tip: You can find out how the scores are calculated in detail down in this article.
Countless customization options
☝🏼By the way: In the following videos, you can learn how to utilize the Drill Mode to practice your a) Dinks b) Serves c) Drives and d) Drops.
Start the drill by selecting the type of shot and decide whether you want to play the drill alone as a basket exercise or in a team with a hitting partner.
- 👤 Single-player Drills: Only one selected (active) player is analyzed here. The position on the opposite side can be taken by a player/coach or a ball machine.
- 👥 Team Drills: Two players can be selected simultaneously. Both receive points for their turn.
💡 Tip: You can find out everything about individual sessions with the Wingfield Box in the article on our Wingman.

Once you have selected your shot type, you can choose pre-defined target zones according to your playing level or customize your own exercises by selecting your target zones. As the level of difficulty increases from beginner ➡️ intermediate ➡️ advanced ➡️ expert, the target fields become smaller.
It's entirely up to you whether you play your drill as a longline or cross-exercise or as a mixed variant. The only fixed thing is your target field. If you are logged into the Wingfield Box with two or more players, you can select the active player(s) before each new round.
⚠️ Attention: You can only send two players to the court simultaneously in a team drill.
Select players first
If you are logged into the Wingfield Box with multiple players, you have to choose the player who should play the drill first.
- Click on the avatars of the players who should play the drill. They will automatically be displayed next to the court.
- If necessary, click the Change sides button to adjust the sides again (the small Wingfield Box on the field indicates where you are).
- Then select the target field and click on Start Drill
👋🏼 By the way: Your high scores for certain drills appear in our community rankings in the app. Remember, you must have played at least 10 balls to get a valid score.
Direct feedback by the Wingfield Box
After each session, the Wingfield Box screen will display a brief evaluation of your performance. This direct feedback helps you concentrate on areas for improvement. Use the scores and the detailed heat map to check whether you have achieved your practice goals drill by drill.
☝🏼By the way: You can access detailed analyses of your shots and videos of your drills as usual in the Wingfield app.
How are the scores actually calculated?
As your primary goal is to hit as many shots as possible into the designated target area, the Drill Score calculation is based on your shot accuracy. However, there are shot types where the speed of your shots also impacts the result.
Shot type | Goal | Accuracy impact |
Serve | Stay back and aim long to create a difficult return for your opponent. |
|
Return | Stay back and play long into the back quarter of the court |
|
Dink | Stay at the kitchen, play short, and try to keep the ball low |

1) Evaluation of your speed 💨
To evaluate your shot speed, we assume a peak value (or 100% value) for a shot speed of 45mph. The table gives a sense of how the rating per shot drops with decreasing shot speed.
Score (Points) | Speed |
100 | 45 mph |
50 | 22,5 mph |
25 | 11,25 mph |
12,5 | 5,62 mph |
☝🏼By the way: If you achieve a higher speed, you could theoretically collect over 100 points.
2) Evaluation of your accuracy 🎯
Regardless of the level of difficulty, all shots in the target get a 100-percent accuracy rating. This naturally makes it more difficult to achieve a high accuracy score at higher levels. The table gives a sense of how the rating per shot develops with increasing distance to the target zone.
Score (Points) | Distance to target |
100 | in target |
50 | 1ft away |
25 | 2 ft away |
12,5 | 3 ft away |
0 | in net |
