The Player Assessment is the perfect tool to evaluate your Pickleball level and track your progress over time.
In the Player Assessment mode, you will be guided through a sequence of pre-defined drills that test your skills in crucial pickleball shots. Depending on your skill level, you can choose between four sequences – the higher the level, the more challenging the drills.
Assessing your playing level
Once you have selected your level, the corresponding drill sequence will be displayed on the Wingfield Box screen. Start with the first exercise and complete the sequence drill by drill.
⚠️ Attention: Most of the player assessment drills require a ball machine or basket feeds from a coach or another player. Only one player can play at a time. Remember to play 30 shots each to get a valid rating for an exercise.
Like in Drill mode, your performance in every exercise will be rated on a scale from 0 to 100 based on your shot accuracy. In other words, hit as many shots as possible into the dedicated target zones. For serve, return, and drive drills, the speed of your shots also impacts your score.
All individual drill scores are summed up for each assessment level to your overall score for the entire assessment. Once you've achieved a score higher than 80, you can consider this stage completed and move on to the next one.
💡 Tip: Regularly assess your shot technique. As your technique improves, your overall score should also improve. When you see the shot technique improvement, repeat the assessment.
Identify your assessment level
All drill sequences are designed to fit the corresponding playing level. With higher levels, the drills become more complex with smaller target zones. Each of the four assessment levels aligns with the Player Skill Ratings of USA Pickleball as follows:
- Beginner: Targets players new to Pickleball by assessing the "basic shots", serve, return, and dinks.
- Intermediate: Targets players able to differentiate between soft game and net play. It adds direction to the Dink and the 3rd shot drop.
- Advanced: Targets skilled players who can quickly change the speed of play by applying pressure and neutralizing pressure.
- Expert: Targets highly skilled players who have precision control of many shots, which they use to effectively execute game strategy.
☝🏼By the way: Official player ratings (e.g. DUPR) are often used to assign players with similar levels to group clinics or leagues. If a player either does not yet have an official rating or believes that his current rating does not reflect his actual skill level, he can assess his playing strength using the Player Assessment Mode. The assignment can be based on their Overall Assessment Score and its corresponding classification (see table below).
